Just hope you don't encounter a wild Pokemon on the way, though, if you haven't received your starter Pokemon just yet. Tall grass is where they are most often encountered, and there's a rather large amount of tall grass on the road.
If you have, though, you can fight the wild Pokemon just fine. It's the Trainers that you have to worry about this time, since it's said that if your eyes meet, you have to battle.
