[ Charles is standing in a field. Behind him - in a distance is a house that is his in Westchester in 1962. It's quiet here, and he is enjoying the quiet, though he definitely wasn't expecting it. Last he recalled, he was dripping wet and standing aboard a CIA ship. This was a pleasant surprise, and he was mostly aware that it was a dream. He let his hands slip into his pockets as he took to the quiet grounds.

It is bright outside, cloud free. He looks up, a smile spread across his lips. He thinks of Raven, and how much she might enjoy a few moments here with him. Then he thinks of those CIA agents that he had just met. The clouds change just a little bit when his thoughts change, briefly darkening. The smile fades, just a little, and is replaced with curiosity and a bit of concern.

He turns on a heel and looks around. He's never had a dream be so vivid. ]

[Doubtful of another match - yet - Ami nonetheless resets the board, recalling her pieces to their starting positions as if it can undo the battle's casualties.

Of course, it's never that easy; not even in chess. She has to reach for the ones on Charles' side, captured like prisoners of war.]

Do you really believe it's possible to go through life without making any? Being at peace with everyone around you? Like this?

[ Eyes the pieces on the board carefully.]

And if they bring the battle to you? What will you do?

What I have to, at that time, whatever it is. [ Which is still a preference for not starting a fight. He has a preference for not having people think of mutants as people you should fear. ]

That's too vague. [She says it seriously, but without the usual bite.] If you just say 'something will work out', you won't be ready for what happens.

I am not planing too much.

[And she is the opposite: always thinking of every possibility, overthinking until her mind plays tricks on her and she becomes unsure of what to do. Still...]

Not planning at all is planning too little.

It isn't as though I'm not planning at all.

Of course I know a plan is useless if it can't be changed at all. But there should be a clear strategy from the start. [A nod towards the chess board.]

I already know. My first strategy is to not end up in a fight.

You should already know that's too naive. Sometimes, whether you want it or not, fights will come.

I'm not going go out searching for one.

[She glances away.]

[She looks back to Charles.]

I'd rather meet and finish the battle before it comes.

[Because they always come. Better to go out and end it than to sit and wait for it to tear apart what she wants to hold together.]

I'd rather do what I have to. I am a teacher, not a soldier.

I'm a soldier. [And a doctor. She's not always certain herself that both are possible at once, but she makes the attempt.]

Do you want to be?

[She lifts her chin and answers easily.]

Of course I'm proud to be a soldier.

Then that's what you should be. All I intend to be is a teacher.

I'm a soldier. However, I'm not only a soldier.

No, that isn't. I'm not going to be a soldier. I won't be.

Then you'd better be thankful for the ones that are.
