[ Charles is standing in a field. Behind him - in a distance is a house that is his in Westchester in 1962. It's quiet here, and he is enjoying the quiet, though he definitely wasn't expecting it. Last he recalled, he was dripping wet and standing aboard a CIA ship. This was a pleasant surprise, and he was mostly aware that it was a dream. He let his hands slip into his pockets as he took to the quiet grounds.

It is bright outside, cloud free. He looks up, a smile spread across his lips. He thinks of Raven, and how much she might enjoy a few moments here with him. Then he thinks of those CIA agents that he had just met. The clouds change just a little bit when his thoughts change, briefly darkening. The smile fades, just a little, and is replaced with curiosity and a bit of concern.

He turns on a heel and looks around. He's never had a dream be so vivid. ]

Not planning at all is planning too little.

Of course I know a plan is useless if it can't be changed at all. But there should be a clear strategy from the start. [A nod towards the chess board.]

I already know. My first strategy is to not end up in a fight.

You should already know that's too naive. Sometimes, whether you want it or not, fights will come.

I'm not going go out searching for one.

[She glances away.]

[She looks back to Charles.]

I'd rather meet and finish the battle before it comes.

[Because they always come. Better to go out and end it than to sit and wait for it to tear apart what she wants to hold together.]

I'd rather do what I have to. I am a teacher, not a soldier.

I'm a soldier. [And a doctor. She's not always certain herself that both are possible at once, but she makes the attempt.]

Do you want to be?

[She lifts her chin and answers easily.]

Of course I'm proud to be a soldier.

Then that's what you should be. All I intend to be is a teacher.

I'm a soldier. However, I'm not only a soldier.

No, that isn't. I'm not going to be a soldier. I won't be.

Then you'd better be thankful for the ones that are.

I am and I won't stop them.

And if there's something you don't want to see lost or destroyed? Will you fight for it?

I don't need to fight as others do.

[She perhaps misinterprets him as a faint smirk touches her lips.]

That's right. As a mentalist, you have your own way of fighting.

[Imagine it, someone even on the level of Zoisite. Yes, he could easily force his own way, couldn't he?]

As a mentalist, I do not need to fight.

[Still misunderstanding, she at first takes him to mean he'd brainwash or hypnotize the people he needs to influence.]

You could say it that way. But in the end, it's still working towards your goal against the ones who'd stand in your way.

What do you think I'm doing?

If you'd say you're doing that, then you're already fighting.

I haven't done anything yet.

Resisting the ones in your way is still another way of fighting.

[Just as, long ago it sometimes seems now - and now, too - research and information and strategy had been her own chief way of contributing to the battles.]
