[Anya is sitting behind the counter of the Magic Box, like she does most days. And she's going over one of the ledgers like she has been lately since Giles keeps making her double check everything. But she's still watching the patrons out of the corner of her eye.

If there's one thing Anya hates, it's people who loiter around and never buy anything. They are the leeches of Capitalist society, as far as she's concerned.]

If you don't want to be thrown out of the store, I highly recommend you actually purchase something.

You've never heard of shrimp. [Dexter doesn't even.] You know, little lobster-looking things that taste delicious in cocktail sauce.

I'm pretty sure if they were that good, someone would have introduced me to them by now. [Sure, she was out of the loop sometimes when it came to human stuff but surely it couldn't be that bad.]

Maybe you have crappy friends.

I don't! I have very good friends, I mean, they were more Xander's friends at first, but I feel like I've really made a place for myself within the group.

.. Oh. [He hadn't meant to bring up actual friend topics with actual feelings and discussions of ~belonging~]

You never answered my question. What does this candle do?

[Oh. Right. Actually...answering customer's questions. She should do that. She plucks the candle from his hand, looking at it for a moment.] It's used for seances, to help contact spirits from other dimensions.

Other dimensions? What about spirits from this dimension? [Not that he's, buying any of this. But if he could talk to Harry just one more time...]

I think all spirits go to another dimension once people die? I'm not sure exactly though.

Oh. Well, I'll take this then. Do I need anything else? [He glances around the shop idly.]

You need a book to show you how to do it. [Actually, he probably didn't, but she wanted him to spend more money.]

[He opened his mouth to protest, but then.. he takes pity on her and sighs.]

Lead me to the books.

[She would have insisted anyways. Anything to make more money. But as it was, she smiled in an overeager fashion. ]

Right this way!

[He follows her with a fake smile of his own.]

So, are you a witch? Or a shaman, or .. you know. [He's trying to be PC and still make it seem like he actually cares about the answer. It's a hard life.]

None of the above. I'm just a humble shop owner. Totally human, and always have been. [Yeah, she might be..trying a little too hard to sell that one.]

[He lifts an eyebrow] Last time I checked, witches are people too.

Right. Of course they are. But I'm not one. I'm just a normal, non magical human. [Is she convincing enough, Dexter?!!!]

Well, hey. That makes two of us. What book did I need? [now that they're...at the books.]

[She looks through the books for a moment and then pulls one out. It's like seances 101 or something equally basic.] Here you go.

Thanks. [He makes his way back over to the register.] How much is this stuff going to run me? [Since I'm pretty much just throwing my money away, he thinks mournfully.]

[She rambles off the price of everything. I'm too..awesome to make it up. Whatever.]

[He raises an eyebrow, outwardly unreactive. Inside, he's actually not that pained. That was better than he thought, even if he is just throwing the money away. But he's not, really, because it does seem to make the girl happy...]

I'm Dexter. [he says, handing her the money.]

[Anya takes the money, gleefully counting it out.]

I'm Anya.

Nice to meet you. And thanks, for your help. [He thinks this chick is weird is hell, but his foster mama taught him right dammit.]

You're welcome. I hope you come in for many more seance candles in the future.

If these work out, I just might. [He lies with an easy smile. It isn't as if Dexter has much interest in people who are already dead. But he waves his Magic Box bag cheerily before making his exit. Finally, he thinks.]
