[ Today is a rather odd dream. Normally one thinks of tea parties and the such when they find the Hatter of Wonderland. Instead there is a room, filled to the brink with unfinished hats and pieces of clocks littered all over the floors. Clocks and hats of every era. Be careful where you step! The fellow in the cowboy hat and tweed long coat doesn't seem to notice you--but he will if you step on anything in the room. Or touch anything. He's laying on his back, cowboy hat on his face, twiddling fingers on his chest and seemingly asleep.

Tread carefully. ]

[It's really asking too much to ask Ami not to be interested in the things in this room. In fact, she's just picked up a particularly curious little clock and is turning it over in her hands to examine it. She gives a quick, sharp glance to the sleeping man. Had he noticed the tiny noise?]

[ A hand lifts up and points straight at Ami. ]

Now that one was a gift meant for the White Queen. She didn't like it too much. It was too red! It's pink, not red! Put it back. I've got to make a better one before I skip off to her court and hand it back to her. Before the Slitheens show up. But, we've got the time. Everyone has the time now. Time is all sorts of wrong, but, not much we can do when you're handling it.

Why put it back? If it's the wrong color for her, why not sell it to someone else?

[She may be mistaking him for someone who makes rational sense.]

You don't just sell things that belong to others. Even if they don't like it. It's rude!

If she won't like it, there's no chance of her buying it. Besides that, you're still making the one for her.

So, I ought to just sell the one made for her?

Are you dense? I just finished saying to sell the other one, the one that isn't for her.

Not dense. Just realizing what you don't about the watches. I did make them!

So what's special about them? [Despite the brusque words, it's a question at face value; considering it's him, they could have any kind of strange property.]

They were made with a purpose. One they may not see now, but that doesn't mean you just hand them over to anyone. A watch is like a hat! You've got to find the right one for the right person. It's not as if you can just hand time to anyone.

And if I asked for a watch, would you make one?

Of course I would! You asked for it! Though, I can't promise it'd work.

What use is a watch that doesn't? They're not just showpieces.

Well, it isn't my fault that it won't work! They'd like to say it is, but I'm not the one who has gone and stopped time.

Stopped time? [She is alert at once.] To stop time is a strong taboo. The person doing it would be punished swiftly.

Taboo and yet someone has gone and done it. One of the Queens. Not sure which one. Most likely the one who likes chopping off heads.

The red queen? [Of course - of course. The hats, the strange feel of the world... Alice in Wonderland.

It's no surprise suddenly that Ami's wearing a very well-known blue dress and apron.]

This is when I say they're nothing but a pack of cards, isn't it?

No idea. Is it? Why would you say that? It sounds completely ridiculous.

[She's never put much stock in lines and scripts these days, any more than fine-sounding speeches. It's probably better that he dismisses it, too.]

You do realize that nonsense is the language we speak around here.

I'm not fluent in it yet. [She says it flippantly, but with a not ill-meant sense of mischief to the words.]

Oh? Planning to teach me? [It's an echo of her request from long ago, to learn the language of the Time Lords. It's flippant this time, nonsense at its base, but nonetheless the same drive to learn.]
