[008 ☿] Cliff-Diving

[There's a gorgeous view from up here: a rocky cliff face overlooking the sea. The breeze plays with her hair as Ami waits at the very highest point, right on the edge. She looks down, an angle likely to give vertigo but she only grins broader.

She's going to jump.

She lets go, and her body suddenly looks so small against the backdrop of open sky as she plummets towards the water and sinks beneath the waves. The movement is a thrilling rush and the moment she's immersed, she smiles. She lets herself stay there, savoring the feeling, and she rises to the surface only reluctantly and belatedly.]

(ooc: not necessarily theme, but I'm open to theme antics as well if anyone wanted to catch her here for them; let me know)

[ Aerith is floating in the water, far enough away to not be in Ami's landing area -- and possibly not even register for notice -- but she's close enough that the falling body grabs her attention. When she jolts she loses her balance and is submerged for a few seconds before she bobs back up, calling: ]

[Ami treads water where she surfaces, quite calmly. Her lips spread in a smirk once Aerith emerges as well.]

[ Although, when she considers what she's just said, she has a good laugh at herself, leaning back into her float. ] But maybe it's time for me to start getting used to it.

Just recently I had some "weird guy" fall through the church roof from miles up ... and you know what? That's the second time it's happened!

Everyone falls for me? That would be incredibly sweet. [ She giggles, and then looks at Ami with a teasing: ] Did you?

Spoilsport. [ She sticks out her tongue, briefly submerging herself before rising back up, now upright. Her chin stays just comfortably above water as she eyes the cliff. ] Doesn't it hurt, falling from so high up?

Not into the water. Not if you're careful.

But landing on the rocks would have been fatal.

[She says it simply, but something in her doesn't quite mind running that risk.]

[ She frowns at that, looking over at Ami with no attempt to mask her disapproval. ] Be careful! It's no good if you get hurt.

I'm not planning to be! [The grin's back, because she likes pushing herself, challenging herself, testing herself.]

So do you plan to try it, too?

No, it's not my sort of thing. [ Which is true. She challenges herself -- to face the obstacles already in her life. To her there's no particular thrill in creating new trials. ]

You can't try that after saying it could have killed you! [ She shakes her head. ] Part of being careful is not jumping off cliffs.

[ That just gets Ami a funny look, since Aerith hasn't been trying or even thinking to do that at all, and she shrugs. ]

You can do what you want. But you won't convince me that that's being careful. [ She leans on her back, pulling her arm into a backstroke. ]

[To blow off steam, Ami lets herself float along, too, letting being immersed in the water soothe her. She tells herself she doesn't need for Aerith to understand her.]

No one's asking you to go up there.

[ Ami was asking if she'd jump too, but Aerith thinks it'd be little help bringing that up. ]

You can ask me to go up, and I'd say yes.

I just wouldn't jump.

[ She looks over, smiles. ] I could cheer you on?

[Not now; that was over when Aerith refused - though the comment is admittedly born of irritation.]

Do what you like. I'm going back up when I decide to.

Oh, boy. [ She clasps her hands, closing her eyes, and focuses on the flow of the water, the breeze on her face. ] Then I'll be down here. [ She doesn't want to leave Ami, but she feels like she'll be dragged into something absurd trying to please the other girl, and her instinct is to dig her own feet in. ]

As you wish! [Once it's decided, a few sharp strokes bring her near the shore, where she stands and wades the last small distance. She heads up the pathway, picking her way carefully across the rocky ground, and finally stands at the peak again.]

I'll be there in just a moment!

I'm watching! [ And she is; she'd like to cheer on if possible, and she'd hate if something did happen and she wasn't ready to help. ] Go, Ami, go!

[Her own cheering section. For a moment, she imagines it at a chess tournament; it'd never be allowed, and that itself makes her grin, now.

She hurries up the slope; it doesn't take that long. For a moment, she's silhouetted against the sky as she prepares herself. Then she launches herself into the fall, and waits for the embrace of the water.]

[ Aerith would get herself booted out of a chess tournament, surely. Or just boot herself.

But once Ami is actually in the air her breath stops. Even if she's mostly sure that Ami will be okay -- ninety-nine percent sure! -- there is still that tiny chance. ]
