[ Today the world is ending. Why is this you may ask? Well, simply because there are three Kaito's here today. Yes, that's right. Three. There's Kaitou Kid dressing in his cape and monocle, Kuroba Kaito the high school student with his spiky and unruly hair dressed in his high school uniform, and a nine year old Kaito who represents the part of him that never really grew up-the part that couldn't grow up after the tragic loss of Oyaji. ]

[ They're all in the same room eating chocolate cake and chocolate ice cream because today just so happens to be their birthday. The cake is huge, there are balloons everywhere, presents lining the walls, party hats on the tables that might randomly appear on gusts' heads and that just might be a chocolate stripper cake tucked over in that back corner. ]

[ Nine year old Kaito is sticking close to Kid while he chows down on that lovely piece of cake and high school Kaito is kind of a little ways away from them, leaning on the wall and staring transfixed at a picture of a magician-his father. Who isn't here and who should be here. ]

[The problem with babysitting for Tetsuya?

Word gets out. Which means more babysitting offers, from more families. Homura doesn't mind kids, really, but she doesn't exactly relate to them, either. Which is why being hired to help out at this birthday party had been a bit of a surprise.

She's right you know. [ Comes the helpful advice of Kaitou Kid. ] You need to pick your knees up a little more, and don't lean forward so much.

[That... was entirely not what she meant. Homura glances towards Kaitou Kid. She supposes it'd be better to distract him than challenge him, if he's the type to stir things up. So she remains unruffled.]

There are some extra drinks in the kitchen. Could you bring them out for us, please?

What? You dare ask the birthday boy to-

I can do it oneesan! [ Nine Year Old Kaito announces cheerily, racing off to the kitchen. ]

[If Homura were the type to facepalm, she might be doing it right now. Instead, she decides that at least the nine-year-old Kaito is old enough to do it without mishap, and it still keeps the (other) birthday boy from winding him up further.

Her words are low-voiced and calm, but firm in that same steadiness.]

No more teaching them to run when they've been told to stop.

[ Kid watches his smaller self disappear and is quite frankly, unimpressed by her tone. ]

Ah, ah-ah~! [ He waggles a finger. ] You didn't say for them to stop. You said- [ And he mimics her voice perfectly ] 'If you run like that, you could end up tripping. Be careful.'

[Misunderstood intentions have followed her for a long time. Of course, this time, it's deliberate and she's aware of that fact.]

Then next time, I'll tell them each to stop running.

[ Now he just yawns. ]

Good luck with getting them to listen.

[ And Nine Year Old Kaito comes RACING back in with the tray of drinks. ]

Here they are!

[She gives the yawning Kaito a look before reproving the running one.]

Don't run inside anymore, alright? [She comes to take the drinks from him, hopefully before they manage to be spilled all over the floor at that speed.]

[ He just smiles and holds out a plate to her. ]

Cake?

[ Nope! Somehow they magically made it to safety without a drop spilled. ]

But... there's enough space for it...

[She takes the cake with little evident enthusiasm; but every crumb will be gone by the time she's finished. As she takes her first mouthful, she watches the runner.]

How many times should I say it? You'll fall and get hurt, and break something.

He won't. [ That is the kid that will one day become the great Kaitou Kid, after all. ]

Kaito-kun has been taught by the best, right Kaito?

[ Kaito-kun nods vigorously. Maybe the reason he's sticking so close to Kid is because he thinks he's his father-or the one most like his dad. ]

Thank you for worrying, but I'll be fine.

[She'll still keep a close eye out; but Homura relents, and even smiles.]

Happy Birthday, then. There'll be all the cake and ice cream you can eat. We'll play plenty of games, too.

YES! [ FISTPUMP ]

...Ah... have you seen my friend Aoko? She's usually wearing a skirt or dress, blue eyes and somewhat messy hair?

I haven't. Is the playing with the other guests? [Homura takes a look across the room. She's pretty sure she wouldn't have lost sight of one of the kids; is she in the bathroom or hiding maybe?]

I didn't see her over there...

It's almost time to cut the cake. We'll wait until then before looking for her. [By then, it will be less likely she's just in the bathroom or off in a corner somewhere.]

Would you like to help cut it?

[ Something like worry crosses his features but it quickly fades and grins ]

Yes! Yes, of course!

[The cake turns out to be remarkably big; but then, shouldn't it be, for a birthday? Homura turns away to find a cake knife. After a moment, she produces one and brings it to the birthday boy. These are important moments in childhood, she knows.]

You're old enough to cut it on your own. Go ahead.

Really!? I can?

[ He doesn't wait for an answer and merely grabs the knife from her and approaches the cake. But as soon as he does a gril in a bunny suit pops out of the top of it, face all red and clearly uncomfortable. ]

...Aoko?

[ Kid Perks up, he is very interested in this. Just... here's hoping she doesn't remember she hates Kid. ]

Oh?

[ The High school version of Kaito even stops brooding at this, a grin spreading across his face as he moves over to help her out of the cake. ]

Hee~ Aoko that's a good look for you.

" Sh-Shut up! "

[...Are they serious? Even Homura manages to look slightly discomposed for a moment.]

Aren't the guests at this party young for this sort of thing?
