[Once upon a time...or. Well. Right now, anyway.

There is a knight, whose exploits are well-known across the land. He is a strange knight, owing no allegiance to either king or kingdom, and only taking on quests that he deems interesting. He is well-known, though, for his cunning and skill, and for his keen perception that some people, lamentably, mistakenly refer to as magic. He is one of the most sought-after knights anywhere, though good luck trying to get him to accept your quest.

Perhaps you are one of the people who've sought him out in hopes that he'll accept yours. Perhaps you're on a quest yourself, and you just so happen to bump into him. Perhaps you are a villain, for after all, every fairy tale needs a good old-fashioned villain. Perhaps you are an ally of his. The possibilities are endless.

After all, every fairy tale needs not only a good old-fashioned villain, but a good old-fashioned hero, right?

Too bad Sherlock Holmes isn't the usual sort of hero you'd expect from a fairy tale.]

Of course; the bodies had to be somewhere. [Unlike many people of the era, but very like Sir Sherlock himself, she looks for the logical behind the supposedly magical.]

However, we've found no trace. Wherever they might be hidden is very secret.

[Very few people do that, in a time like this, which is why Sherlock finds himself somewhat impressed by this woman. Most other people would dismiss something like this as magic, which, in his opinion, is nothing more than science that people simply don't understand yet.

Then again, science isn't exactly popular among most people.]

I assume you've already interviewed the witnesses. Anything from their testimonies I should be aware of?

Only that the witnesses all agree in details. Whatever happened, it's something real.

[This is no hysteria, no coincidence, not after this much.

It may even be magic after all; she believes in magic, even in the odd era of the dream. She simply looks for earthly reasons first. The simplest solution...]

[Being one of the few skeptics around, he's sure there's a logical explanation for that.]

Were there any trap doors, hidden exits, anything that could possibly be used for keeping a body from sight?

[She's quite pleased, and perhaps relieved, to meet someone sensible as the investigator of this case, really.]

No, nothing like that. It wasn't stage tricks. I thought of that first, since they were performers after all.

So we're looking for someone--or perhaps multiple people--who can somehow "magically" [you can practically hear the quotation marks] make a body disappear into thin air, as well as snatch a valuable crystal, in front of an entire audience.

[Beat. He grins.]

Ah, finally. I haven't had a proper request like this in weeks.

[She finds herself grinning, too, as her thoughts start to slip into a better order.]

[Of course he is. His mind is already whirring with possibilities, with questions and possible solutions. He can't wait to get there.

He spurs his horse on.]

[The knight barks out a sharp laugh and matches Sir Sherlock's pace easily. The feel of the animal beneath her and the feel of the speed spur her on as surely as their boots goad their mounts.]

[They'll reach the city in no time like this, he's sure, but for now, he's enjoying the feel of the wind, the animal galloping underneath him, the speed at which it's going, as his mind works away at the possibilities, the questions and the solutions. He's been deprived of that feeling for far too long now.]

[She feels equally free, normally confined to her duties and answering to the lord of the land, however independent-minded she may be. Running like this, riding like this, feels like a great dream that makes an unusually pleasant feeling steal over her.]

I'll go ahead! Unless you want to catch up - if you can.

[With that, she hurries ahead, urging her horse to its fastest pace.]

[If not, he takes it as one, urging his own horse on to its fastest pace. If it's a race she wants, it's a race she'll get, and he happens to be particularly good at racing.]

[The knight doesn't hold back, no longer concerned with what the loser might think if she wins, but only with going all-out to seize the victory. Her horse, bought for speed more than strength or stamina, is fleet of foot and sure-footed. In almost no time at all, she's in sight of the gates.]

[He leans down, spurs his horse on for one more burst of speed when he sights the gates. It just might be enough to make the difference.]

[They converge on the gate at the same time, within a hair's breadth of each other. Only once she's crossed inside does Dame Mercury slacken her pace and draw rein.]

That was pretty good! Shall we take care of this business, then?

[He draws rein as well, and the horse slows to a trot.]

Of course. Isn't that why I'm here?

You wouldn't be the first to be here just to eat and drink deep at the lord's expense - if they can get it past him.
