But there is no life on Earth.
Near the north pole of planet Mercury, there are signs of life, all enclosed in a thin, transparent dome that still allows a clear view of the heavens. Inside, the air is clean and breathable, and even stirs itself in artificial breezes.
The entire city is a mass of blue crystal, luminous with the glow of thousands of solar trees both within and without, their blue cels attached to silvery branches and trunks. It makes a striking contrast, and the structures provide the city's energy, veritable solar power farms, bustling and thriving like the city itself. . Everywhere, the roads lead inward towards a palace, attention drawn to it by its height, taller than any nearby building.
The lush sound of splashing water comes from a clear, ornamental pool in the entryway. Tropical fish swim contentedly there, glimmers of golden koi amid and around the stems of water lilies. There is greenery, too, and flowers provide a seasoning of color. Overhead, the ceiling is dizzyingly high, adding to the sense of open space.
Seated at the edge of the pool, dressed in an elegant gown and with the sigil of her planet showing proudly on her forehead, is the Princess Mercury, now queen of her reborn kingdom. She plays a simple, longing melody on the harp she holds in her lap.

"Then I agree, it is a fine thing that she should have been punished and the world allowed to grow again. But I wonder, how was it that the kingdom, and the solar system, were returned to life? With what power? Or has it somehow blossomed in her absence?" Dead worlds cannot be returned to life where he is from.

Her answer was perhaps even stranger than that, but no less true. And, in any event, it was certainly not the princess atoning for her crimes, as he may have assumed.
"Evolution itself was returned to zero. When it developed again, only Earth was capable of supporting life, until it also fell to ruin once more." Destruction is a powerful force; and yet, as with so many calamities and disasters throughout history, life finds a way.

He looked all around him, curiously. Terra and Gaia were the only planets he had visited, in life. "Do you rule these lands, then? Fairly and kindly?" He had never truly been a leader of of others, though he had guided and manipulated, doing his bitter work behind the scenes.

"This planet once held life anyway," she adds, coming to the second question. "And it was mine my right. I was born as its princess." It had taken a long time, but why should its princess not now be its queen?
"I rule for the sake of making this planet great once more." Fairly and kindly are different questions; but there are few with complaints. She's had time to learn her trade.
