Pet Shop of Horrors - Career Day

For a pet shop, it's oddly quiet. But the animals seem contented, many laying down or catching a nap with their fluffy tails curled around themselves. The awake ones lightly paw at their long ears or attentively watch passers-by. They all seem to be in good spirits.

They're also all the same breed, with soft and luxurious fur and cutely mischievous expressions. Swirled markings on their fur create a somewhat dramatic effect.

Amid the innumerable myriad cages is Homura, dressed in a uniform and apron that suggest she works here. She does not look particularly like the nurturing sort for her charges. Instead, she stands against the wall nearest the door, with her arms folded across her chest. Once or twice, she bangs on the bars of one of the cages with her hand.

"It's very simple to say so, and true. But it can also lead to harm to many people around them."

"Sure," he nodded as he fiddled with his glasses, "Of course."

But Clark knows this, and it's as useless to argue with someone who already understands as to argue with someone who never will.

"Would you like to see the rest of the shop instead?"

"If you've got more than these creatures, sure."

[braidstobows]

"They are the only animals kept here. There is various pet food, collars, and other necessities for different types of pets, however."

Mostly, she wants to get him away from Kyuubey while he still understands he should be cautious.

"Fair enough. Show me what you've got. I could use a new collar for my dog."

[braidstobows]

"They're right over here." She seemed more comfortable with every step taken away from the cages. She even managed to put on a more appropriate salesperson's demeanor. "What type of pet is this for?"

[reporteroftomorrow]

"A medium sized dog, with a fairly broad neck."

[braidstobows]

"I think you'll be interested in these." The display, either as a joke, innocuously enough as a coincidence, or by some twist of the dream, even included a collar with the telltale S logo.]

Clark eyed the collars, pointedly avoiding the Superman collar and picked up one with a bright red fire-hydrant instead.

"I think he'll like this one. How much are they?"

[braidstobows]

"They're 1000 yen." As she'd been trained to do, or perhaps simply to still keep focus away from the animals, she pressed the sale. "Would you like me to wrap it up for you?"

"If you don't mind, that'd be great."

Clark reaches into his wallet and pulls out a 1,000 yen note. Probably just a trick of the dream, though.

There's no change, and she tucks the bill away in a pocket. For the moment, she doesn't bother taking it up to the cash register, but she will later.

"Thank you for your purchase," she says politely. "I hope you enjoy it."

"I'm sure he'll like it. Thanks again."

[braidstobows]

"Please come back soon." Judging from their whole encounter, while she didn't exactly dislike Clark, this was simply the expected line from a part-timer at a shop.

"Of course. Have a pleasant day."

And Clark heads out, totally ignoring Kyuubey. Little guy gave him the creeps.
