Studious Dreamer

"I had considered the posiblity of you inherting Ootori Medical from me, but you've decided to study abroad? I see. Then you do not plan to follow after your brothers."

The voice of Kyouya's father still rung in his ears as he sat in a Library. Most of the book are in english in what appears to be a upper scale university. As for Kyouya he is sitting at a table with a notebook on the table, his legs crossed as he leans back in the chair momentairily. He had just come back from Japan, visiting everyone for a festival and had even brought back several of the pictures that they had taken. In front of him were various books on business, law, and medicine along with his own notebook filled with pages of note in his own handwriting. It was fairly quiet and easy to study which is why it was one of the places Kyouya came the most when it came to his studies, that and there were only a few who came in an out of that particular floor.

Checking a text that his phone once more, he closed it before picking up his pen and resuming his studies, "I still have a long ways to go."

Ami's true first love had been studying; or at least, it had been something she found constant and steady enjoyment in, without any of the guesswork of so many relationships. She'd grown up assuming she'd follow in Mama's footsteps: a doctor. She'd dreamed of studying abroad. The last part, perhaps, explained why she was finally at this school and why she'd stopped at Kyouya's table.

"Excuse me." She waited only a moment to gain his attention. "My class is also using that textbook," she nodded towards one of the medical texts. "Could it be we're both medical students here?"

Kyouya glanced up for a moment, taking the opportunity to adjust his glasses, "Business administration actually, but my families business is in the medical industry so I'm taking the time to study it as well."

It was common though for most people to believe that he was a medical student, with the way that he kept up with ground breaking treatments and breakthroughs as well as different drugs that were being developed in the industry. "Actually I've found that many of the medical students don't take the initiative to come to this floor and rely on the basic computer labs downstairs."

And while they were helpful, they were also limited in their use and the number of distractions from those using the facility wastefully.

A working relationship would be beneficial, then, and Ami made the decision to introduce herself.

"I'm Ami Mizuno, studying here from Japan. The university has developed certain surgical techniques I want to observe and learn." As an almost afterthought, habitual courtesy adds, "I'm pleased to meet you." It sounds very rote.

She has something of a reputation in her own world already, for her contributions to medical research and her quick grasp of the surgeries she's learned to perform. It's no secret, there, that she's even been known to give advice to her supposed teachers.

"You're from Japan as well?" Kyouya seemed a little surprised, he hadn't been aware that there were many students studying abroad from Japan at the University, but then he hadn't taken an interest in looking up the exact statistics just yet, "I'm Kyouya Ootori, third son of the Ootroi family. It's a pleasure to meet you as well."

Kyouya had heard about the technique that she was talking about, and discussed it in private with a few of the professors so to hear about someone else taking an interest in it he was curious. "Were you needing to borrow my book for a moment?"

"No; I have my own here," answered Ami, who was always prepared with study materials. "I was just interested to meet someone else involved in this curriculum." The fact she might be distracting him from his work is not lost on her, but she offers no apology for it.

"In your situation, you're being prudent." She's not sure why a third son seems to be anticipating taking a strong place in the family's interests, but perhaps - perhaps - he has the skill for it. "You should know all the aspects of what you intend for the future."

It was of more merit to hopefully learn more about someone that might eventually become well known in this particular field, besides he currently held the high grades for the particular set of classes; though there those in the same course whose averages he didn't have knowledge or access to.

"Well my eldest brother has already graduated from medical school and is practicing alongside our father. They're both very capable. And as you said one should know all the aspects of what their intentions for the future. So I'm being certain to study both."

After-all there was still a ways before his father would be satisfied with Kyouya and further yet if he had hoped to surpass his brothers. "But you plan on entering the surgical field once you finish your studies?"

If so a working relationship would be beneficial indeed.

"I've planned on that for a long time," Ami confirms. At first, it had been following her mother and nothing else. That hadn't worked, but over time, she gradually came to find her own reasons for the same end.

So maybe it doesn't really matter if it's for Mama, or if it's for something inside herself that wants to think she can be a better person, or for the prestige and challenge of defeating the illnesses in front of her, or something else more nebulous still.

"I'm specializing in cardiac surgery in particular, and I'm interested in robot-assisted surgery as well." This is still a breaking field in the year she'll wake up to.

Robot-assisted, well Kyouya had heard of theorhetical developments and that there were some remote surgeries involving lasers but nothing to truly be considered robot assisted; interesting he would really have to get to know her. "That a rather impressive goal, Cardiovascular surgeons are rare especially to find someone who wants to specialize in it. Currently my family's hospital has several cardiologists but usually resort to outside sources for surgery. It seems that you've chosen the right field and university to study at though."

She can do this: keep the conversation simple, focused on this mutual interest, and walk away without conflict, without tension. Let herself relax.

"It isn't my only reason," Ami admits. "Of course I wanted to come here for the program; it's the top one at this point in time. However, I'd also wanted to study abroad to begin with. I wanted to travel, and experience another country's way of life."

This is both practical training - she has no personal authority in her world, but she is a companion of the shitennou, who do. It's also her simple wish: test herself, prove herself, out on her own.

"Well of course everyone has their own reasons for choosing a university, depending on what it holds for them and considering the merit that the choices hold."

After all everyone had been surprised when Kyouya had stated that he would be studying abroad rather than attending the same facilities that his brothers had, and as for why the university in particular that he had chosen well that was something that Kyouya hadn't revealed to anyone. Though the talk about traveling brought back a reminder of when his father had called him to Spain to escort a woman, a potential wife of his older brother. "Do you plan on continuing travel once you finish your studies?"

Kyouya seems to have resumed scribbling things down in his notebook, occasionally glancing at his text.

She finds herself, for a second, wanting to give the answer he'll expect, the one he's looking for - whatever that might be, she'd have to determine first. But she's not like that anymore. She can follow her path, regardless of opinion.

"I have every intention of it," she says with a certain complacency. She'll make the opportunity, no talk about if it presents itself here.

"I suppose that you would have the means and time to travel as you wanted so long as you maintained an open schedule." Though it wouldn't exactly be desirable for someone on a payroll to travel frequently, a specialist or consultant probably wouldn't be necessary to have on a regular basis. Though there would be an issue with availability in the case of some situations. "Is there any destination in particular that interests you?"

"Germany," she admits. "I wanted to study in Germany as well as America." America, she'd finally had the opportunity to study there awhile. But Germany, she's never set foot on - not yet.

Well Kyouya didn't know an extensive amount about Germany outside of the standard business information about major exports and imports. It had never caught his interest, so he was somewhat curious as to why she might want to visit such a place but didn't bother asking outright. "I see."

Well travel held little interest and no merit for business, and since they were in the library rather than a social room, Kyouya returned to the common interest between them, "When is the next observation you plan on attending?"

"There's a surgery scheduled for next week. It's an unusual and somewhat difficult situation. I'd like to see how its handled by the surgeons." She'd been planning to observe it for awhile, a reflection of an approaching date in her waking life as well.

[kyouya_okaasan]

"Sounds like an excellent opportunity then Ms. Mizuno." Though Kyouya most likely wouldn't be present he would have to be sure to make a note of it and get a summary or report on it from someone. The fact that she would be observing the procedure directly and studying the reaction of the surgeons rather than observing video or from a gallery with explanation meant that she was most likely in the later part of her studies rather the introductory courses. Also if her class was sharing the same text, it narrowed it down to within a year to a year and a half of Kyouya's. "I hope that it goes well and you have an opportunity to learn a lot from it."

He's good at analysis. Ami smiles, a bit coolly. "I certainly intend to make the most of all my opportunities here before I return to Japan."

It was a dream, after all. In reality, her studies had been interrupted back then - by important things, but interrupted nonetheless. And she still hasn't been able to return to them.

She wants it, her crowning symbol of her ability, her crowning symbol of being in the right: that even with everything that happened, she chased this normal, human dream to its end.

Chasing dreams, some might have accused him of doing the same if most people thought that he never dreamed and saw his as a plotting and somewhat detached and emotionless individual. No chasing dreams was more Tamaki's style. "So you do plan on returning to Japan, that's nice to hear. Though I'm certain your travels will allow you to see much of the world as well."

"I'll return eventually," she says with equal confidence. "I may want to travel to other countries, but I want to live in mine." More specifically, near her mother and near the few people she calls her comrades back there.
