"Do you think I know what that was?" he laughs taking one step back towards the light. "We shouldn't go in any further until we've got some kind of a plan. Or y'know, probably not go back in at all."

He's not ready for a fight, he's not really good at hand to hand combat and he doesn't have a gun. He's not even sure if a gun would do any good with...whatever it was that was there.
